As the recent COVID-19 pandemic heats up again, sequelae after infection, especially the condition of "persistent cough," has become a problem for many people. Yuan Rung Hospital's Department of Traditional Chinese MedicineLIN CING YIDepartment Head pointed out that there has been a significant increase in such patients in outpatient clinics after the pandemic. The novel coronavirus not only impacts the immune system but may also cause long-term effects on the respiratory tract, leading to some patients still suffering from persistent cough after recovery.

LIN CING YIDepartment HeadSharing a case: A 26-year-old young woman, since her first diagnosis more than three years ago, has been prone to recurrent colds and bothered by allergic rhinitis. After catching a cold again in February this year, her cough symptoms persisted for nearly two months without healing, and in severe cases, she even had difficulty sleeping due to night cough and developed bronchitis. The patient had tried various methods and finally turned to Traditional Chinese Medicine for help, and finally recovered after nearly a month of conditioning.

LIN CING YIDepartment Head explained that many patients with persistent cough, from a TCM perspective, are no longer just simple colds but rather exhibit lung qi deficiency and even affect the functions of organs such as the kidneys, liver, and spleen. Therefore, TCM treatment is not only about expelling pathogens based on superficial symptoms but also focuses more on "Fuzheng" (strengthening the body's vital energy), which means strengthening one's own immunity while also considering spleen and stomach functions, to fundamentally regulate the constitution.

In addition to medication, LIN CING YIDepartment Head also emphasized the importance of lifestyle and dietary adjustments. She suggested that patients should be in deep sleep before 11 PM, allowing the body to fully repair during the critical moment of "Yin-Yang transformation." In terms of diet, it should be light, avoiding irritating foods such as ice products, fried foods, and spicy foods to avoid aggravating the body's inflammatory response, and replenishing water in a timely manner, which helps alleviate throat discomfort.
